Volunteer Stories — Mera Ghar Orphanage

Hira

Weekend Reading Circles

Hira runs a 45-minute Saturday read-aloud for Grades 1–3. She pairs phonics games with story talk and sends children home with one “just-right” book. After six weeks, 9 of 14 students moved up a level.

Usman

Math Catch-Up Coach

Usman, a commerce graduate, created quick drills for place value and fractions. He used whiteboards and peer teaching. By mid-term, his group’s average quiz score rose from 48% to 72%.

Nimra

Art & Confidence Sessions

Nimra set up a simple studio with donated paints and folders for student portfolios. She swaps grades each week and ends with a one-minute gallery walk. Attendance on “art day” is the highest of the week.

Owais

Makers & Coding Club

Owais introduced Scratch for Grades 5–7 and helped the club build a working traffic-light simulation. Three students who rarely spoke in class presented their code at the showcase.

Shazia

Library & Language Buddy

Shazia organized the bilingual shelf and started “new word cards” that travel with readers. Library checkouts doubled in two months; children now average two books per week.
